The most important decision you make when placing your child for adoption is choosing the adoptive family. You’re shaping your child’s future. The couple you select should share the same values as you. Don’t worry. The right couple is out there, and we’ll help you find them.

Our dedicated Birth Parent Specialist at A Loving Option Adoption works closely with you to ensure you find the right couple to raise your child. They will be with you every step of the way.

How Are Adoptive Families Approved?

Potential adoptive couples go through an intense process to qualify to adopt. Here are a few things they must do:

  • Have a home study to ensure their home and all other household members are ready to receive a child.
  • Extensive background checks, including fingerprinting.
  • Provide medical and financial records.
  • Answer questionnaires about their personal history, family, home, mental and physical health, and marriage.
  • Provide referrals from other friends or family members.
  • Create a family profile (bio) with photos and letters to potential birth parents.

What is the Process for Selecting a Family?

Your Birth Parent Specialist talks with you at length to determine what is essential to you. They will ask you several questions, like, “Do you want your child to have siblings?” ”What environment do you want your child to grow up in? “What are your thoughts about education, religion, hobbies, etc.?”

You also want to discuss the adoption plan you are most comfortable with. How much contact you wish to have with your child and their adoptive family determines the type of plan you choose. These are the three plans:

Open Adoption

With an open adoption, you and the adoptive couple might exchange identifying information. Both of you can determine what type and how much contact is appropriate.

Semi-Open Adoption

A semi-open adoption is also known as a mediated adoption plan. You still correspond with the adoptive family and your child, but all communication goes through your Birth Parent Specialist. This plan provides more privacy.

Closed Adoption

A closed adoption provides the most privacy possible. You have no contact with the adoptive couple or your child. You both remain entirely anonymous.

The more details you provide your Birth Parent Specialist, the closer they will be to finding the right match. Once they know what you are looking for, they will present bios of potential adoptive couples.

You will know they are a good match as you see their physical traits, discover their sense of humor or favorite foods, or learn about their hobbies. The family that adopts your child won’t be complete strangers. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about them.

If you’d like, your specialist can arrange a “match meeting” to meet the couple you are considering. You can begin building a relationship with them immediately.
