Seeing a positive pregnancy test could have been a shock. It likely wasn’t what you were expecting or hoping for. Now, you have to make one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make. How are you going to handle your unexpected pregnancy?

You have three options: have an abortion, choose to make an adoption plan, or consider parenting. If parenting is absolutely out of the question, that leaves you with abortion or adoption.

The outcome of these two choices is very different. Let’s take a closer look and try to determine the right choice for you.

Abortion Considerations

If you think having an abortion will erase your unexpected pregnancy, it’s not as simple as it sounds. All abortion procedures have potential physical complications, not to mention the possibility of mental health impacts.

The two types of abortion are medical (the abortion pill method) and surgical. Either drugs or an abortion provider will terminate your pregnancy and empty your uterus. Then, there will be a recovery period.

The Abortion Pill Method

This method uses two drugs to end a pregnancy. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone. All pregnancies need progesterone to develop. Without enough of this essential hormone, the pregnancy cannot continue.

The second drug is misoprostol. This drug causes vaginal bleeding and uterine contractions to expel the pregnancy and tissue from the body.

These drugs come with risks, including:

  • An incomplete abortion, which may require an additional surgical procedure
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Infection and fever
  • Digestive systems
  • Allergic reaction to the drugs

Surgical

The second type of abortion is a surgical procedure. A surgical abortion involves an abortion provider dilating your uterus and inserting suction and medical instruments to manually remove your pregnancy and any related tissue. The risks of a surgical abortion include:

  • Perforation of the uterus
  • Infection
  • Damage to the cervix
  • Asherman’s syndrome, which is when scar tissue develops in the uterus, and can cause infertility, pain, and irregular periods

Why Would I Choose Adoption?

Adoption is handled very differently than it was just a few decades ago. Today, the expectant mother or birth mother makes all of the decisions.

It used to be said that when a woman chose adoption, she was “giving up” her baby. The truth is, she’s giving her baby a future and a life she cannot provide at this time.

Now, a woman considering adoption can make the following choices:

  • The adoptive parents and family
  • The lifestyle and opportunities her child will have
  • The amount of contact she wishes to have with her child and their adoptive family
  • Her hospital plan and how she wishes to introduce her child to the couple she’s chosen
  • The ability to change her mind up until 3 business days after she signs the court surrender documents

You pay nothing to place your child for adoption. A Loving Option Adoption provides the following benefits for free:

  • Housing assistance may be available during pregnancy
  • Food, utilities, phone, and certain transportation costs may be available
  • Counseling and support
  • Prenatal and delivery expenses are paid as needed
  • Option to choose the adoptive family for your child
  • A support group for birth mothers
  • All legal expenses and attorney fees are cost-free to you
